For Leadership, Give Me Shackleton

Antarctic Explorer Ernest Shackleton has been called “the greatest leader who ever came on God’s earth – bar none.” In this talk, Angela tells the story of Shackleton’s 1914 – 1916 expedition. Shackleton’s stout ship the Endurance was frozen into the sea off the coast of Antarctica, and then crushed by ice. It sank leaving the crew stranded on the ice. Yet, Shackleton led every one of his 27 men to safety. Angela shows that Shackleton succeeded because he was equally dedicated to the people he led, the purpose they sought, and the plain truth. The talk tells the story of Shackleton with special emphasis on behaviors any leader can adopt: treating everyone with respect, encouraging camaraderie, admitting your mistakes, and being well-prepared and optimistic.

Alzheimer’s Disease: Aging with Grace

There is much new information about Alzheimer’s Disease. Among the most interesting was developed by Dr. David Snowdon’s study of a group of Catholic nuns. Aging with grace is a touching story that offers lessons on what we can — and can’t — do to protect our brains from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Learned Optimism

Psychologist Martin Seligman and coaches at UC Berkley have demonstrated that athletes who are optimistic overcome setbacks. Those who were pessimistic don’t perform well after and setback. This is just one of a number of studies conducted by Seligman that shows that optimists succeed where pessimists fail. Optimistic students do better in college than their SAT scores would predict. Optimistic salesmen sell more. And in every election since 1948, the more optimistic of the presidential candidates from the major parties has been elected. Why is that? What implications does it have for us … and can we learn to be more optimistic?

What’s Your Score?

It was the cover story of TIME magazine February of 2004. Six years later and you still don’t hear much about it. The article was called “The Secret Killer” and showed how the leading causes of illness and death are related to this simple blood test. Most medical doctors still don’t understand the importance of it, yet it is the most important blood test you’ll ever take.
This blood test is more important than your cholesterol level, blood pressure, blood sugar or body fat! A high score indicates that your risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke or Alzheimer’s disease is greatly increased. In fact, nine of the ten leading causes of death are increased when your score is high.

Accent on the Immigration

Immigrants have drive and different experiences that give them an edge, if they manage to adjust to their new country. I know first hand the challenges a newcomer faces. The current level of prosperity can serve as a motivation for the newcomers and as a pacifier after the certain level of comfort is achieved. Yet, every person and every organization can benefit from tapping into the human creative potential, whether the person is a recent immigrant or not.
