For Leadership, Give Me Shackleton

Antarctic Explorer Ernest Shackleton has been called “the greatest leader who ever came on God’s earth – bar none.” In this talk, Angela tells the story of Shackleton’s 1914 – 1916 expedition. Shackleton’s stout ship the Endurance was frozen into the sea off the coast of Antarctica, and then crushed by ice. It sank leaving the crew stranded on the ice. Yet, Shackleton led every one of his 27 men to safety. Angela shows that Shackleton succeeded because he was equally dedicated to the people he led, the purpose they sought, and the plain truth. The talk tells the story of Shackleton with special emphasis on behaviors any leader can adopt: treating everyone with respect, encouraging camaraderie, admitting your mistakes, and being well-prepared and optimistic.

Learned Optimism

Psychologist Martin Seligman and coaches at UC Berkley have demonstrated that athletes who are optimistic overcome setbacks. Those who were pessimistic don’t perform well after and setback. This is just one of a number of studies conducted by Seligman that shows that optimists succeed where pessimists fail. Optimistic students do better in college than their SAT scores would predict. Optimistic salesmen sell more. And in every election since 1948, the more optimistic of the presidential candidates from the major parties has been elected. Why is that? What implications does it have for us … and can we learn to be more optimistic?
