INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
Training & Mentoring

According to Wikipedia, ‘Training’ refers to the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies as a result of the teaching of vocational or practical skills.

‘Mentoring’ refers to a personal developmental relationship when a more experienced or knowledgeable person helps a less experienced or knowledgeable person. As a member of Toastmasters in District 26, you are both trained and mentored; in some cases at the same time.

Twice a year, we are required to train club officers in their roles. We accomplish this at the Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) events held geographically throughout the district. We combine training with mentoring through our unique approach. We first obtain trainers with experience in the role they are to teach. As often as possible, we try to team a seasoned trainer with another trainer with limited experience. This offers an opportunity for mentorship.

The TLI experience is formatted to ensure both training and mentorship take place. First, attendees are welcomed as a group and motivated to learn as much as possible from each other. Each training team will give a 1-2 minute preview of each officer session. The individual club officer sessions are then taught about the basic responsibilities. They then transition into a mentoring session sharing experiences and identifying 2-3 key areas they believe are important for the club members. The group gathers again where each session representative will brief their 2-3 key areas and why the group focused on these.

This method of combining training with mentoring has proven to be very successful in helping our members become better communicators and leaders. The results continue to show in our efforts towards our club Distinguished Club Program (DCP) goals. Are you ready to be a trainer and mentor to more than your club members? If so, contact me for more details at lget1112@d26leaders.org.

TLI training sessions begin on January 7 at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, CO. This is the most well-attended session because of the proximity to Denver and because it offers great breakout sessions.

You do not have to be a club officer to attend. Training is open to all toastmasters free of charge so take advantage of this benefit and join us for an education and networking opportunity you’ll enjoy!

Defenders of Speech Mark a Milestone

Defenders of Speech, Buckley Air Force Base's Toastmasters International Club, recently celebrated its 5th anniversary. Norm Frickey, Toastmasters District 26 Governor, dropped by the Oct. 27th meeting to present a certificate from Toastmasters International. Norm is shown presenting the certificate to Defenders of Speech president, Linda Bierman. Also pictured are members Jeanette Early and John Sampson, and guest Lonnie Pettey. In the second row (l - r) are VP membership Rich Bierman and past club president Tom Gross.

Defenders of Speech meetings are from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays each month at the Base Chapel. Sack lunches are encouraged, and for those with young children, babysitting services are available. Access to the base for Defenders of Speech meetings may be arranged by calling 303-484-1776.

James Seballes, a former member of Defenders of Speech (left due to military deployment) contributed an article to the book Lift as You Climb. A collection of short inspirational articles by members of District 26, the book is available for $12.99 at the Tattered Cover, Barnes & Noble and Amazon. com. ▪

Evolution of the District Website

Now that the conference (and soon the holidays) are over, the D26 website will aggressively move forward. It’s been a challenge due to a lack of Word Press experience, sufficient volunteers, and time-consuming trial and error. The webteam sincerely appreciates your patience.

► We now have an advisory board comprised of toastmasters and non-toastmasters who are skilled and experienced in their respective field and will help develop a stratedy for success.

► We have received some great club photos that will be used instead of the stock photos offered by TI. Clubs are submitting links to published press releases and you are encouraged to check them out.

► For your convenience, training dates now appear both on the calendar and the Education /Training page. We will soon be adding educational materials and YouTube videos.

► We will expand the right side menu to offer quick links to important news.

► Eventually we will have rotating images representative of the D26 landscape and we will make a minor change to the appearance of the TI banner.

► The list of test speakers available for contests was a great help and we are developing a plan to list certified judges available for speech contests.

► Everyone has their preferred format or method of locating information. We will use a standarized format based on best practices as determined by the advisory board. Please note that the Search field is also an effective option.

Deep appreciation to webmaster Jonathn Sterner and Hugh Curley for all their work on posting the Speakers Bureau. Market research indicates the need for a few tweeks and we will soon begin addressing them. The primary change will be to post a summary of the speeches with a link to the bios (reverse of what we now have). This will make it more efficient for those seeking to engage a speaker.

Alex Pyle has done an exceptional job of keeping the calendar current and “clean” as well as addressing many posting requests and ideas.

All of this consumes an enormous amount of time as technology doesn’t always respond as expected. A simple one word edit can throw everything out of alignment and result in an hour’s worth of work.

We look forward to offering the district exciting concepts and valuable information in a streamlined format. ▪

New Clubs Forming

The Colorado Chapter of the National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) held their demonstration Toastmasters meeting on November 20, 2011. With 36 enthusiastic young people, it was standing room only at the Sakura Square meeting room downtown. District 26 Governor Norm Frickey welcomed the NAAAP members and provided them with a lively explanation of what they can expect to get out of Toastmasters. The meeting featured NAAAP member Kirk Matsuzaki giving his ice breaker speech, followed by a few well-chosen Table Topics from Sharon Frickey.

Although it is focused on the Asian-American community, the NAAAP Toastmasters club will be chartered as an "open" community club. Meetings are every 1st and 3rd Sunday at 3pm on the second floor of Sakura Square, 1905 Lawrence St, CO 80202. Check the website at http://www.naaapcolorado.org/Events/Toastmasters.aspx for details about the next meeting or contact Curtis Eubanks at creubank@alum.mit.edu for more information. Experienced Toastmasters are most welcome! ▪

D26 Speakers Bureau Moves Forward

The D26 Speaker’s Bureau is developing nicely and is on-line.

NOW is the time to get your information listed on the bureau so you can have the opportunity to give speeches to service clubs, schools and associations.

All you need is a message and a desire to share it in a 20-40 minute speech. Go to d26toastmasters.org, click on SPEAKERS BUREAU and BECOME A SPEAKER to discover why and how to join the Speaker’s Bureau.

If you belong to a service club, school or association, please suggest to the program chair the benefits of using Toastmasters as weekly speakers. Ask them to visit d26toastmasters.org and FIND A SPEAKER. Speakers are sorted by category and then sub-category.

The Speakers Bureau is an excellent opportunity to continue your TM communication development by giving speeches to non-Toastmasters groups and giving longer speeches. Remember that you can get credit for two speeches in each manual given to non-Toastmasters groups. Simply have a toastmaster in attendance complete the evaluation form at the end of the speech.

Columbine Communicators Offers Idea Sessions for Job Seekers

Job seekers in the current economy face staggering odds; but they know that. What they may not know is there are still ways they can boost their chances of finding a good job – even if they think they have tried everything.

The Columbine Communicators Toastmasters Club in Littleton is offering sessions at two of their meetings that highlight techniques job seekers can use to increase their chances of finding the job they want.

The special meetings will be held JAN 17 and FEB 7 at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office starting at 7 PM.

The sessions are titled The Keys to a Successful Job Search: Nothing’s Working… Now What Do I do? and will be led by Linda Sorrento, M.A., a past president of Columbine Communicators Toastmasters who teaches workshops and coaches individuals in the public and private sectors on career development.

"Preparing people with appropriate skills to target their job search successfully in this difficult business climate is highly rewarding," says Sorrento. "There are definitely effective techniques that can give them a boost."

Sorrento will cover tools for job searches in her first 20-minute session and the search itself in the second session. The sessions will be held in conjunction with the regular meeting of the Columbine Communicators Toastmasters, an open club for people wishing to improve their public speaking and leadership skills.

Columbine Communicators meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at 7 PM at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, 11139 Bradford Road in Littleton, CO. 80127. Meetings usually last for about one hour.

For more information on the club or the special job seekers sessions, contact the club’s VPPR, Jerry Mattson, at jer2Matt@msn.com or visit the club’s website.

Please spread the word about this event. ▪

New Bilingual Toastmasters Club Forming!

I have recently had the opportunity to attend three meetings of El Puente Bilingual Toastmasters Club and the meetings were fantastic! Participants may speak in either English or Spanish, with the goal of the club being to promote practicing or enhancing your Spanish-speaking skills in the familiar Toastmasters environment.

El Puente (“The Bridge”) Toastmasters was formed by Mike Mauser and Helen Hankins and is working toward gaining enough members to charter. The club meets every second and fourth Tuesdays from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. So far the location has alternated between Denver and Wheat Ridge, and the club will soon establish a permanent location.

Members are actively presenting manual speeches, and table topics are often focused on an international theme. Participants range widely in their Spanish-speaking abilities, but the common goals of increasing communication and leadership skills are emphasized.

I encourage Spanish speakers of all levels to visit this dynamic and growing club. Information can be found on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/El.Puente.Bilingual.Toastmasters) and Meetup (http://www.meetup.com/El-Puente-Bilingual-Toastmasters) or by contacting Mike Mauser at 303-862-6036 or michaelwmauser@gmail.com

Corporate Recognition Is Powerful

Empowering employees to excel is improving our businesses & communities.

Jim Sultan, Toastmasters International Director for Region 1, helped recognize two companies in our district.

While in Colorado Springs, Jim spoke at the offices of Business Networking International (BNI). Sharing his knowledge of business skills that are enhanced with the Toastmasters program is an awesome fit with BNI. Brad Leppla has been the forward-thinker in bringing Toastmasters to the businesses in Colorado & Wyoming. When business owners are better speakers they are more attuned to their customer’s needs. Success comes to everyone this way.

Tracey Muterspaugh accepted Jim’s words to enhance her Toastmasters club growth and Martha Taylor accepted the award from the main stage at the fall conference.

Anadarko Oil Company, which has offices in Houston and Denver with operations throughout the world, is improving how they communicate. Developing a powerful Toastmasters program for their employees to build new communication and leadership skills has been well supported. ▪

"Cheers to both of these great companies who are improving their employees and our communities by utilizing the Toastmasters program." — Tom Hobbs, DTM

Musings from the Editor

If you read the final paragraph in the lead article, you know that Bea Macliz is offering the opportunity to be a trainer at TLI. Many of the roles are filled for the 2012 winter sessions (but not all); however, these events happen twice a year. Presenters will be needed for the summer sessions.

TLI isn’t just about being trained. It’s also an opportunity to serve – to give back. You can serve as a trainer. You can serve as an organizer. You can serve as a functionary. And you can get credit for it.

As a trainer you can get credit for a manual speech. Pick out a speech project that covers your presentation and have someone evaluate it. Or you can expand a presentation from the Better Speaker series, the Successful Club series, or the Leadership Excellence series (you need those for your ACS or your ALB). If there’s enough time available, you can present from one of the Success Communication or Success Leadership manuals (you need one of those for your ACG).

If you lead a TLI team, whether as a TLI coordinator, as a recruiter for the trainers, or any other function, you can get credit for a High Performance Leadership project.

You can also get credit as a functionary. For instance, if you don’t have time for a High Performance Leadership project and you want to staff the registration table, you can recruit other members to work with you and qualify for leading a club special event in the Competent Leadership manual.

By now you get the picture. Contact Bea at lget1112@d26leaders.org and let her know are ready, willing, and able to do your part as a trainer and a mentor, as an organizer, or as a functionary.

The leadership instinct you are born with is the backbone. You develop the funny bone and the wishbone that go with it.

~ Elaine Agather
