Description of Manuals The first manual that is issued to a new member is called the Communication and Leadership manual. It is produced by Toastmasters International and features 10 speaking assignments in which each focuses on specific objectives. In most clubs, it may take more than a year for you to complete every speech in the C&L manual. The reason for this is because you probably won't be presenting a speech at every meeting. Instead, you will be learning and performing other meeting roles throughout your Toastmasters membership. Speech Assignment 1: The Ice Breaker Time: 4-6 minutes Topic: Talk about yourself Objectives: To introduce yourself to the club and serve as a starting point. The club gets to see where you are in your speaking skill level. Speech Assignment 2: Speak with Sincerity Time: 5-7 minutes Topic: Any topic that you are already knowledgable about Objectives: To convince the audience of your earnestness, sincerity and conviction and to confront and control nervousness. Speech Assignment 3: Organize Your Speech Time: 5-7 minutes Topic: Any Objectives: Organize your thoughts into a logical sequence and to build a speech outline that has an opening, body and conclusion. Speech Assignment 4: Show What Your Mean Time: 5-7 minutes Topic: Any Objectives: Learn the value of gestures and explore the different ways of using body language. Speech Assignment 5: Vocal Variety Time: 5-7 minutes Topic: Any Objectives: Explore the use of voice volume, pitch, rate, and quality and to achieve a pleasing and natural voice quality. Speech Assignment 6: Work with Words Time: 5-7 minutes Topic: Any Objectives: To exercise the skill of using descriptive words to paint a picture for the audience and be very clear in word choice. Speech Assignment 7: Apply Your Skills Time: 5-7 minutes Topic: Any Objectives: Bring the skills together that you've learned so far by presenting a speech that is researched. Speech Assignment 8: Add Impact with Your Speech Time: 5-7 minutes Topic: Any Objectives: To learn the value and skill of using props and visual aids in a presentation Speech Assignment 9: Persuade with Power Time: 5-7 minutes Topic: Any Objectives: Make the audience agree to your viewpoint or accept your proposal. Speech Assignment 10: Inspire Your Audience Time: 8-10 minutes Topic: Any Objectives: Use all of the skills you've gained so far to inspire and motivate your audience. Upon successful completion of the C&L manual, you will have earned the title Competent ToastMaster (or CTM) |
