Seamasters started as a "closed" Toastmasters club for Seagate employees only. In 2001 the club voted to open up to the community. At any particular time, we have about 20-30 members, about half of whom are Seagate employees. Our membership includes several authors and professional public speakers. Seamasters club members bring a diverse, eclectic, and exciting mix of languages, cultures and backgrounds. We have, or have had, members from Afghanistan, Australia, China, India, Iran, Mexico, Pakistan, Russia, and Canada! English is the second (or third!) language for many Seamasters. It is wonderful to help people overcome their nervousness and improve their speaking skills in, what is for them, a foreign language! Be it thrilling, sad, frightening, or joyful, everyone brings a unique experience and interesting stories to Seamasters. Guests and visitors are always welcome to attend our meetings for a preview of what Toastmasters is all about. We will ask you to introduce yourself to the meeting, and briefly say why you're there. Afterwards, we will ask for your general impression about the meeting. Our diligent VP of Membership, Mike Upchurch, will probably want to know if you would like to join the club. Don't feel pressured - you can return as a visitor as often as you like.
Seamasters is a dynamic, growing, and vibrant club, and has attained recognition within the Toastmaster International organization. Our club has achieved the TMI "Presidents Distinguished" title every year since 2003. This is the highest club distinction within TMI, and is only given to clubs that achieve 9 out of 10 goals for growth and member advancement established by TMI.
Seamasters meets every Tuesday from 12 noon to 1 pm in the Seagate Longmont facility at 389 Disc Drive. The building is about 2 miles west of Longmont on Nelson Road. Park on the south side of the building. The main entrance is marked by three flag poles. Check with the receptionist at the front desk for the meeting location for that day. We generally use one of the conference rooms accessible in the main lobby. If these rooms have been reserved for business purposes, we may meet in a room that requires Seagate employee badge access. On these rare occasions, non-Seagate employees (including Seamasters members, guests, and visitors) will need to present some form of identification at the main desk, be issued a temporary badge, and be escorted (by a Seagate employee) to and from the meeting room. NOTE:All rooms are handicap-accessible.
There are dues and fees for both the Seamasters club, and it's parent organization, Toastmasters International (TMI). TMI has a one-time-only membership fee of $20, payably when you join any Toastmasters club, including Seamasters. TMI dues are $4.50 per month ($27 every 6 months), payable bi-annually in April and September. The Seamasters club does not have an initial fee to join. Our dues are $2.00 per month ($12 every 6 months), payable at the same time as the TMI dues. The initial membership fee gets you your first ten-speech "Competent Communicator" manual, plus a one year subscription to the Toastmasters monthly magazine. Once you achieve advanced speaker status, you will need to purchase additional manuals, which are generally $3 - $5 each.
NOTE:If you are a Seagate employee, the Seagate BMT or SMT will pay all your dues, fees, and manual costs.
